For the last few weeks, we have been learning from Jesus what true “Kingdom of God” righteousness looks like: He places angry, contemptuous words on the same spectrum as murder and lustful looks on a continuum with literal adultery; a simple YES or NO can and should be just as trustworthy as a solemn oath; marriage vows are solemn and don't get easily nullified by legal “divorce” papers. Now, in Chapter 6 Jesus shifts the focus from the “what” to the “why” when it comes to righteous acts. Why we do them matters to God, not just that we do them. Specifically Jesus addresses three foundational “spiritual disciplines” — prayer, giving and fasting — where motives matter hugely and determine the nature of the resulting “rewards”.
